WhatIfWorkWasOneOfYourFavoriteThings?-01

When I was a child my favorite thing to play was "work." I loved to play work. It was, really, my favorite thing to do. And, I "worked" a lot of different places, too.

I had my own library.

I became a lawyer who wrote down pages and pages of notes about my cases.

I owned storefronts with dolls and animals for sale.

And, of course, I hosted a good-many lemonade stands.

Looking back, I can see there was one thing I loved about work: the exhilarating feeling of accomplishment.

Playing work allowed me to expand upon my interests.

Playing work allowed me to make an impact.

Playing work put me in my "flow state."

Flow is described by Mihaly Csiksgentmihalyi as "the mental state of operation in which a person performing an activity is fully immersed in a feeling of energized focus, full involvement, and enjoyment in the process of the activity."

Work as play makes sense when you are using your talents and making an impact.

Work as play makes sense when you are a part of a community of people who are working with you towards a common goal.

What would you have to believe in order for work to be one of YOUR favorite things?

What puts you in your flow state?

I'd love to hear from you in the comments below!

Are You Really Living?

I'm trying something new today. No pictures. Just words. No excess time spent crafting a perfectly pinnable image. Just solid inspiration from me to you. I stumbled upon the most amazing quote the other day. It said, when asked what surprised him most about humanity, The Dali Lama answered:

"Man sacrifices his health in order to make money. Then he sacrifices money to recuperate his health. And then he is so anxious about the future that he does not enjoy the present; the result being that he does not live in the present or the future; he lives as if he is never going to die, and then dies having never really lived."

If that doesn't make you shiver in your boots, then you're either already totally awake or you're totally dumb. (#truthbomb)

The questions we must ask ourselves and the best takeaways I can suggest:

  1. Figure out what REALLY matters to you (What are you chasing? What do you crave?)
  2. Figure out what REALLY LIVING looks like for you (What LIGHTS you up?)

Spend some time contemplating these two questions and you're sure to experience a profound shift in your life.

Coaching Myself Through Learning to Paint At 30

  Learning to Paint at 30

Something Big

About a week before my birthday, I decided I wanted to do something big for myself to commemorate turning 30.

For some people, the idea of 'something big' may entail a thrill-seeking adventure. Bungee Jumping. Swimming across the Atlantic. Parasailing. Cliff diving... and things of that nature.

But for me, a CREATIVE adventure is always the most daring and feisty adventure of all.

For my 30th birthday I decided I was going to stop telling the story that would love to be able to paint, and instead actually learn how to paint.

So, why painting?

Because when I paint, I feel so good.

Because I believe that we can get good at anything we choose to pursue.

Because I love being out of my head and in the moment.

Because I believe it's never too late to start something new.

Because I believe "the way to know life is to love many things."

Self-Coaching

And can I just say: wow.

There have been some bumpy spots along the road. If I did not know how to coach myself through this I probably would've stopped back at day two or three.

That annoying voice inside of our heads gets even louder when we try new things. That annoying voice can not stand when we are not immediately good at something. But I knew to be ready for this.

Starting at the VERY beginning of a new creative adventure has me so revved up as a coach. Pursuing something you are passionate about gives you energy. Saying yes to a desire is like a great big YES to your life.

Your desires are not random. They are like a compass leading you to the next step. Desire trumps talent and what you want wants you too.

If you have something you want to go after in life, or something you want to change.... know this-- it is so very possible.
