Just Thoughts

Sylvia HallComment

One of the coaching tools I use with clients may seem rather dismissive at first.

But honestly, it works. I've experienced it's benefits for myself and I've seen it work for my clients too.

Most of our problems are invented by our thinking.

We tell a story about a situation and the story isn't helpful.

That's right: we invent problems with our thoughts.

If we can step back mentally and see this, it's life changing.

Those stressful emotions we inflict upon ourselves?

Just thoughts.

Next time you are swirling in a mental storm of stress and overwhelm, remind yourself: 'These are just thoughts.'

We can experience tremendous relief when we learn how to quiet those thoughts.

Why is relief so great?

Well, relief is a light (non-heavy) emotion that is a gateway for other light and non-heavy emotions. That's right... relief is a gateway emotion.

What can relief lead to?

Excitement. Hope. Joy. Bliss.

When we feel good, we can do good.

Why Worry Is Useless And What To Do Instead

Life Coach Kansas CitySylvia HallComment

Why Worry?

On some level, we all understand that worry is a waste of our precious time and energy.

Of course we know that worrying about something doesn't really help the situation. We all know that. (Don't we?!?)

Worry drains our minds and drains our spirits.

Nevertheless, the tendency to get wrapped up in our minds about a problem leads us to worry. Especially if that is a thought pattern for you. (What you practice, you get good at!)

It's so seemingly easy to worry...

Or is it? Is it really easy to be stuck in a thought pattern of energy-zapping, joy-strapping worry? Of course not.

Win the War On Worry

So what can be done? Let's say you find yourself stuck in a stream of worry.

The best way to change a habit is to replace it with a new one.

Yes! Trade out your worry (mind drama) for something you can actually do (take action!) about the thing you are worrying about.

While worrying is just a cycle of negative and cumbersome thoughts, a new actionable habit is something that empowers you to feel the way you want to feel.

Try one of these Instead:

  • Pause for a mindful minute of meditation
  • Text a friend and tell them how awesome they are
  • Say a prayer
  • Visualize sending the most positive-of-vibes to the person/thing are worrying about
  • List out 3 things that you are grateful for
  • Say an affirmation (aka, a favorite 'thought on purpose')
  • Move your body in a fun and flamboyant new way (Example: raise the roof)
  • Go outside and breathe in 10 slow-deep-breaths of fresh outside air
  • Stay where you are and breathe in 10 slow-deep-breaths of air
  • Ask yourself: How can I think about this differently?
  • Ask yourself: "What can I do about this? What can't I do about this?" Go from there.
  • Remember this! The problem isn't the problem. The problem is how we're thinking about the problem.

I'm sure there are a zillion other ways you can win the war on worry.

The most important thing is to find something that resonates with you.
